Everything you need to know about the Life in the UK Test

Anyone wanting to become a British citizen must pass the Life in the UK Test.
The test is designed to ensure that citizenship applicants have a good knowledge of the United Kingdom and the English language.

The questions in the test are all multiple choice and cover a number of topics from local customs and traditions, to laws and politics that govern the country.

Quick facts about the test

  • The test is made up of 24 multiple choice questions
  • The test is only available on computer so it is worth having some basic knowledge of to use the mouse
  • Questions are chosen at random by a computer
  • Applicants are given 45 minutes to complete the test
  • The pass mark is 75% (18 questions correct out of 24)
  • Each attempt to pass the test costs £34
  • The test is conducted at over 90 Life in the UK Test Centres across the UK
  • The test is available ONLY in English at present
  • You need to book the test 7 days in advance by phone or in person at a test centre of your choice. The centre will give you a date and a time for the test during booking.
  • To take the test, you will bring a photographic Identification which must be one of the following:
    -A passport (from your country of origin)
    -A UK photo card driving licence, full or provisional
    -Home Office travel document
    -A Certificate of Identity Document (CID)
    -UK Residence Permit and bearing a photo of the holder
    -You will also bring a test fee of £34 (ask the test centre whether they will accept cash,
    cheque or card).

What will happen when I arrive at the test centre?

Once you arrive at the test centre the following will happen:

  • The Supervisor will record your full name, date of birth, country and place of birth, nationality and your postcode.
  • Your photo ID will be checked.
  • Then You will pay the test fee
  • Next, you will be seated at a computer to take the test and you will be asked if you want to take a short practice test of 4 questions or if you want to start the Real Test.
  • After the practice test, the supervisor will log you on the Real Test and your test will officially start.
  • After completing the test you will get the test results immediately. The test supervisor will tell you whether you have passed or not.

If you pass the test, the test supervisor will give you a pass notification letter. The letter will contain the following information:
  • Your test date
  • The name of test supervisor
  • The test centre location
  • Your unique test ID number

When you have completed the citizenship Application form, you will need to attach you pass notification letter to the form and send it to the Home Office.

What happens if I lose my pass notification letter?

Your pass notification letter is very IMPORTANT! You will need to keep it in a safe place to send with your citizenship application. If you lose this letter, you will NOT be able to get another copy of it.

What happens if I fail the test?

Your test supervisor will inform you if you have failed the test.  You can retake the test as many times as you like but you will have to pay the Test Fee each time you take the test. So it is wise to get fully prepared before attempting the test.
Remember there will be 7 days advance booking each time you want to take the test.
